Immigrant Leader: Our Communities Will Keep Fighting for Our Rights Despite Coney Barrett’s Confirmation
Following a rushed confirmation hearing, Amy Coney Barrett was sworn in late yesterday as a justice to the United States Supreme Court. In response, New American Leaders Action Fund Founder and President Sayu Bhojwani issued the following statement.
“As communities across the country stood in lines hours long to cast their ballots, Senate Republicans were casting their vote for a lifetime appointment that threatens our collective civic liberties. By confirming Amy Coney Barrett as a Supreme Court justice eight days before the presidential election, they have put the rights and lives of women, immigrants and anyone with a pre-existing health condition on the line.
“By ignoring the dying wish of late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Senate Republicans have once again demonstrated their self-serving priority, concerned more with earning the approval of Trump and his sexist, white supremacist cronies than serving the American people. The rushed confirmation hearing was a blow to our justice system, our country and our communities.
“As a movement based in immigrant, BIPOC and progressive communities, we cannot stand for Amy Coney Barrett cutting at the protections and freedoms that should be indisputable. Her record and extreme conservative views fit into Trump’s warped vision for our country and are not appropriate for any judge, let alone a Supreme Court justice.
“We will not allow Trump, Senate Republicans, Amy Coney Barrett, or any other outside groups to play politics with our rights. People like us are turning out in record numbers to vote and make our voices heard. We will not go back or be silenced. Our movement will vote Trump and other extremists out of office to create a democracy that works for and protects all of us.”
