New American Leaders Action Fund: “Our Democracy is for All People—No Exceptions. Senate Democrats Must Keep Fighting For the People.”
Just moments ago, all 50 Senate Democrats voted to begin debate on the For the People Act. Yet despite their unanimous support and overwhelming public support of the bill, Senate Republicans voted to block this democracy-strengthening legislation. In response to this vote, New American Leaders Action Fund Interim President Sara Le Brusq issued the following statement:
“Let’s be clear: Our democracy is of, for, and by all people—no exceptions. Senate Republicans may have blocked the For the People Act from moving forward today but our movement to strengthen our democracy has withstood unreasonable stunts many times before.
“Senate Republicans have historically used the filibuster to stall civil rights and social justice legislation. But as we saw in the civil rights movement of the 1960s and in countless instances since then, when immigrant communities and communities of color stand together, no amount of political games can stop our fight for justice.
“New American and BIPOC voters have overcome centuries of racism and systemic oppression to stand up for our right to vote and make our voices heard. Despite the best efforts of Republicans in the Senate and state legislatures across the country, we are committed to doing so again, but we can’t do it alone.
“As a movement of New Americans, BIPOC, LGBTQ+ Americans and allies, we are heartened to see all 50 Senate Democrats stand in favor of bringing the For the People Act up for debate and to a vote. Now we need them to take action and continue the fight by bringing this critical democracy-strengthening legislation back to the floor and ending or reforming the filibuster. It is past time for action.”
